Trombone Shorty at Delray Beach Garlic Festival

Trombone Shorty at Delray Beach Garlic Festival

I discovered Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue on Spotify. I was listening to a radio station on there, and when their horns came on I had to hear more, it was love at first listen… I also watched Sonic Highways on HBO. It is an 8 episode mini-series documenting the Foo Fighters making their new album of the same name. Every episode they travel to a new city in the US, delve into the music history of the area, and record a song in a week. With some influence from the city, and the musicians who perform there, many of the songs feature musicians from the area. The New Orleans episode talks a great deal about Trombone Shorty, where he got his name, and features him on the track “In the Clear” recorded in the world Famous “Preservation Hall” So anyway… When I saw the Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue were performing at the Delray Beach Garlic Festival, I was a little excited… Ok I was very excited. Pre-Sale Tickets were only $10!!! Even after the deadline ended as long as you got there by 6:00pm the ticket price was still only $10. I quickly got on the phone with the babysitter, and scheduled date nite for the wife and I. We arrived at about 5:45pm, and after finding $5 parking we got our $10 tickets. The Stinkin’ Garlic Festival has everything you would expect; lots of food, tented vendors for unique items, a kids Section, and the Live Music. Most of the money was handled by purchasing tickets, $1 for 1 ticket, so after a purchasing a sheet of 20, with cold beer (6 tickets) in hand, we started looking at the vendors. My wife an I immediately gravitated to a tent with these really cool paper puzzle lamps. Our daughter is turning 3, and we both quickly agreed, that this would make a unique and fun birthday gift for her. I would estimate there were 20+ non-food vendors at the festival selling everything from Guatemalan type clothing, sunglasses, hats in all shapes and sizes, various art, and jewelry. The kids area was larger than I expected, but tickets were still $1 per ticket, and most rides took 3 tickets. We did actually play a game, trying to win a stuffed teenage mutant turtle stuffed animal for our boy, but although I had the lead at one point, I lost my stride when the my golf ball bounced off the track. The Stinkin’ Food The food vendors varied from Garlic Pizza, Garlic Chicken Curry Kabob, Garlic Chicken in a pita, and even a stand with Garlic Ice Cream. My wife and I discussed the idea, that Garlic Parmesan Fries would of been  a real hit, and even fantasied about having a food truck for a minute, but after 15+ years in the food industry I’m really not interested…...

Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary

Posted by on Feb 2, 2015 in A Featured Post, Tom's Blog

Grateful Dead 50th Anniversary

If you haven’t yet heard, the Grateful Dead are getting back together one more time, with a “Fare Thee Well” three night stand. They picked Soldier Field because it was the location of their final show with Jerry Garcia in 1995. 2o years later, Original members Phil Lesh, Bob Wier, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzman will be joined by Jeff Chimeni and Bruce Hornsby, as well as Trey Anastasio of Phish. They are doing 3 shows, over the fourth of July weekend, July 3rd, 4th, & 5th, 2015. Billed as “Fare thee Well”, it should be an amazing for young and old Grateful Dead fans alike. Who is the dead and why are they following me? The Grateful Dead was started 50 years ago in 1965 when Phil Lesh joined “The Warlocks” and they changed their name to the “Grateful Dead”. Playing gigs in the San Francisco Bay area, they became a symbol of the counterculture and psychedelic scene. Their loyal fans, known as Dead Heads, would tour with them, moving from town to town, selling handmade jewelery, bottles of water, and grilled cheese sandwiches. There really wasn’t much of anything you couldn’t get in the lot at a grateful Dead show, and when they came to town, they literally brought a town with them, with as many as 15,000 people following them at their height. I was lucky enough to see the Dead almost a dozen times, and I was at the final two concerts in Soldier Field back on July 8th and 9th, 1995. It is an experience that never will be relived, but for the millions of us, who clung to Phish when Jerry died, Trey Anastasio makes an amazing replacement for this one time event. I’m not saying they won’t tour again, because we all know “The Music Never Stopped” on “Shakedown Street” even when “Bertha”, “Jack Straw, and “Tennessee Jed” have a “Touch of Grey”, their still “Going to Hell in a Bucket”. Grateful Dead Envelope Art Back in the days before the internet, there were only a few ways to get tickets to a dead show. You could go to Ticketmaster outlet and campout, you could call at 10am or whatever time they went on sale (typically getting a busy signal for a half hour or more of calling), you could wait for “a miracle” day of the show, or the best option when it worked, was to send off mail order. The first x thousand letters they received would get tickets. In order to stand out from the pack, dead heads started turning the envelopes into art work, hopeful it would increase their chance of getting mail-order tickets. Below are some of the examples of the envelope art that was sent in this year. About Thomas StrubingerHusband, Father, Foodie, Cardinal Fan. I am just an average joe, trying to make my way...

Silver Spoon Jamaican Restaurant

Posted by on Jan 30, 2015 in Food, Tom's Blog

When I moved to Palm Beach Gardens I really had a hard time finding the good Jamaican food in North Palm Beach County. Coming from the Broward we were spoiled by great food from all Nationalities. There was a place that was short lived on Northlake, but Silver Spoon has been around a couple years now, and their Oxtail is fantastic! We have also tried the Curry Goat, the Brown Stew Chicken and the Jerk Pork, but I always go back for the oxtail. If you are in the area you should stop by and grab an order to go. 2 Large orders feeds my family of four, but my kids (3 & 5) can eat almost an order of the beef themselves. Florida maybe Sunned-In

Florida maybe Sunned-In

Just heard the news on the new that the state of Florida could be sunned-in for the next several days. Residents have been urged to hunker down at your nearest beach and/or tiki bar for further instructions. Use extreme caution when braving this blizzard of sunshine, preferably SPF30. We are asking our friends and relatives to the north to please keep us in their thought as we deal with two feet buried in the sand. About Sam LeeMarketer, Photographer, and Meme Generator. palm beach gardens epic sunset 2015-01-25

These are the pictures from my drive home on January 25, 2015. After spending the day at the fair, I dropped the family off at home, and proceed to make the weekly pilgrimage to Publix for rations. I’m  a pretty good shopper, and armed with my grocery app, make good time through the store. I am lucky to have not had my kids with me, becuause chances are the chore would of taken twice as long and I would of missed this brilliant display of colors… As I walked out of the store I was stunned my what I saw, and immediately got my phone ready as I turned onto PGA Blvd. I snapped as many as I could as I drove over the Intracoastal Bridge on my west, although at my favorite place to get a picture (the bridge tenders house) my phone failed me, and I got none… The picture with two palm trees showing the Waterway Cafe, is my favorite and the featured image for this post, and also the one that made it onto my Instagram account.
