Will Ferrell, the comedian actor known for his roles in movies such as Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and Old School, as well as sports movies Semi-Pro and Kicking & Screaming is boldly going where no actor has gone before. On Thursday, Ferrell will participate in all eight Cactus League Spring Training games scheduled for that day in Arizona. He will play for various teams and will look to play all nine positions on the field during those eight games. In order to get to the various stadiums on time, Ferrell will travel via helicopter. The stunt is being dedicated to the fight against cancer and will raise money for Stand Up 2 Cancer and Cancer for College. Bert Campaneris a former infielder who is famous for playing all nine positions in a game for the Athletics on September 8th, 1965, will join Ferrell. Funny or Die & MLB Productions are filming the entire thing for an upcoming special on HBO. This won’t be the first time Ferrell will apart of a baseball game either. Back in 2010 and playing the character of Ray “Rojo” Johnson, Ferrell was ejected from a Round Rock Express game after throwing just one pitch for the then triple A Pacific Coast League affiliate of the Houston Astros. Ferrell also famously had a pizza delivered to the mound before throwing the first pitch at Wrigley Field in Chicago for a Cubs game in 2012. Will Ferrell throws out a ceremonial first pitch and eats a slice of Famous Chicago Deep Dish Pizza before the Chicago Cubs Miami Marlins game at Wrigley Field in 2012. It was supposed to be a night of celebration in Miami on Saturday night. It was senior day where the many seniors on the Hurricanes were to be honored for their four years of commitment to the program. It was supposed to be a win for a program in desperate need of something to hang their heads high on after another disappointing year. It was also supposed to be a historic night for Duke Johnson who needed under 100 yards rushing to become the leading rusher in program history. Well Johnson got his record Saturday night at Sun Life Stadium but nothing else happened as the Hurricanes fell to the Pitt Panthers 35-23 making Pittsburgh bowl eligible and extending the Hurricanes losing streak to three. Johnson rushed for just 89 yards on the night but that was enough to surpass Ottis Anderson as Miami’s all time leading rusher at 3,339. That was about it though on the night for Miami as they looked flat and disinterested for most of the game. Brad Kaaya threw for 296 yards and two touchdowns but most of that came in the first half and the defense gave up 360 yards including 135 on the ground to the Pitt running backs. For the Hurricanes it is a 6-6 season that could have been so much more. They lost games early in the season to Louisville and Georgia Tech that seemed winnable. They went into the Florida State game at 6-3 and had a realistic shot at finishing the season with eight or even nine wins but seemed to shut down after the late defeat to the Seminoles. With 6 wins the Hurricanes will play in a bowl game but nothing that will be acceptable for this program. Yes, for the seniors, it will be a reward for their hard work and a trip to end their college careers on. They were hoping for a trip to Arlington or Pasadena, not Tampa or Shreveport. Wide Right. Wide Left I,II, and III. The Miami Muff. When you hear these names the Miami/Florida State rivalry comes to mind. For decades it was the rivalry to end all rivalries. It was a rivalry that other rivalries tried to be like. It decided National Championships and undefeated seasons. It was THE rivalry in college football. While the past decade has resulted in struggles for both programs on and off the intensity and significance of the game has not faltered. So when undefeated Florida State came to Miami on Saturday night and put their 25 game winning streak on the line against a 6-3 Hurricanes squad on national television everyone knew it was going to be a grudge match. The Seminoles might have been the defending national champions and undefeated in 2014 but they had struggled as of late having to come back against inferior opponents Louisville and Virginia. Meanwhile, Miami had ripped off three straight impressive wins over Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina. There were many pundits and analysts who actually said that Miami would finally be the team to end Florida State’s run and it almost happened. With a sold out crowd of over 75,000 at Sun Life Stadium, the Hurricanes jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead and appeared to be the dominant team on both sides of the ball. The ‘Canes took a 23-10 lead into the half and once again Florida State looked beatable for the first thirty minutes. Just like against the Cardinals and Cavaliers, Florida State was the dominant team in the second half. Outscoring Miami 20-3 in the second half, the Seminoles started to roll and catch some lucky breaks. They scored what ended up being the game winning touchdown with three minutes left before Miami made one last shot at the upset. The Hurricanes made it down to the Florida State 42 before freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya threw an interception that ended the game and sealed the victory for the Seminoles, extending their win streak to 26. In the loss, once again Kaaya and running back Duke Johnson headlined the offense for Miami. Kaaya went 16 for 34 with 316 yards passing, two touchdowns, and the one interception, while Johnson carried the ball 27 times for 130 yards and a touchdown. While the loss will keep the Hurricanes out of the ACC title game again this year, the season is not over. There are two games left in the season starting this week at Virginia. A win against the Cavaliers and in two weeks at home against Pittsburgh on senior day would give Miami an 8 win season and would likely result in a mid to upper tier ACC bowl game. One month ago the Miami Hurricanes suffered a bad loss to Georgia Tech and there were talks that maybe the coaching staff just wasn’t working out with the talent that the school had. The schemes, especially on the defensive side of the ball were under heavy scrutiny. Banners were being flown over Sun Life Stadium calling for Head Coach Al Golden’s head and many prominent alumni were echoing the same sentiments for him as well as defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio. The program seemed to be spiraling out of control in the wrong direction. That was one month ago and boy how things have changed. In that time the Hurricanes have ripped off three straight wins headlined by Miami’s beat down of North Carolina on Saturday 47-20. In the past three games, Miami has outscored their opponents 132-60. That discrepancy could have been even higher if you factor in that most of Miami’s starters did not play much in the fourth quarter Saturday and Miami’s defense held the Tar Heels to just three points through the first three quarters. It was another dominant performance on offense for the Hurricanes, led by now Heisman contending running back Duke Johnson who added another 177 rushing yards and three total touchdowns to both his season and career totals. At 3,080 total rushing yards for his Hurricanes career, Johnson passed Edgerrin James Saturday for second on the all time Hurricanes rushing list and is just 252 rushing yards away from being the leading rusher in Hurricanes history. It wasn’t all just Johnson on the offensive side of the ball though. Brad Kaaya had another impressive start on Saturday, completing 11 of 17 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Kaaya connected with six different receivers, lead by Tight End Clive Walford who had six catches for 89 yards and two of Kaaya’s three touchdown passes. The offense has been there all season though. More importantly, the defense had a solid performance for the third straight game. Through the first three quarters, the Hurricanes defense allowed just six points to the Tar Heels and appeared to dominate, especially at the line of scrimmage. The big question is will the Hurricanes be able to continue to click on both sides of the ball as they welcome the #1 ranked Florida State Hurricanes into town on November 15th. The game will be played in prime time at 8pm and will be aired nationally on ABC. Heading into last night’s prime time contest with conference rival Virginia Tech, the Miami Hurricanes season had been one resembling a rollercoaster ride. While the Hurricanes were a perfect 4-0 at home, the wins came largely against inferior opponents and even in the wins the team looked shaky at times, especially on the defensive side of the ball. In addition, Miami had yet to record a road win despite coming up just barely short on a number of occasions. As a result, there was a lot of unrest among the Hurricanes faithful with the way the program was being coached, especially by head coach Al Golden and defensive coordinator Mark D’Onofrio. All this resulted in a must win game Thursday night in Blacksburg if Miami wanted to save their season and still be alive in the race to get their first ACC Coastal Division title. Behind 249 yards from star running back Duke Johnson and a defensive performance that resembled that of the days of the Hurricanes of the late 90’s and early 2000’s the Hurricanes did just that, they kept their season alive. Not only did the Hurricanes dominate on both sides of the ball, they did it in a place (Blacksburg, Virginia) where the program had only won once since 2003. In fact, in that time period, the Hokies were 8-3 against Miami overall. All those statistics didn’t seem to phase the Hurricanes who improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC. Weather the Hurricanes have officially “turned their season around” has remained to be seen. While they now have back-to-back blowout wins over Cincinnati and Virginia Tech, the true test will now come over the next three weeks. In that time period the Hurricanes will play two home games against two of the tougher teams in the league. The first will come November 1st against a North Carolina team that, while down this year, has given the Hurricanes problems the last few years. The second comes just 2 weeks later when Miami welcomes the #1 ranked Florida State Seminoles into town. In addition to it being a big in-state rival game and by far the biggest game of the year for the Hurricanes, Miami will look to ruin Florida State’s run at a second consecutive National Championship. Last night’s win was a step in the right direction to saving what at one point seemed to be a lost season for Miami, the question will become can they sustain it over the next few weeks and ultimately down the final stretch run of the season.
